Descripción
ABCA2 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family, involved in lipid metabolism and intracellular cholesterol transport. It is primarily expressed in the brain, liver, and macrophages, where it plays a role in maintaining cellular lipid homeostasis and the transport of sterols and sphingolipids. Structurally, ABCA2 contains two transmembrane domains and two nucleotide-binding domains, which use ATP hydrolysis to drive lipid translocation across intracellular membranes. ABCA2 is implicated in myelin formation and neuronal function, highlighting its importance in the central nervous system. Dysregulation of ABCA2 expression has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers, where it may contribute to drug resistance by altering cellular lipid composition.
