Descripción

Disrupted in schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) is a scaffolding protein with diverse roles in neurodevelopment, synaptic function, and adult neurogenesis. Originally identified in a Scottish family with a high incidence of schizophrenia, DISC1 has since been implicated in several psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder and major depression. DISC1 interacts with multiple molecular partners, influencing signaling pathways involved in neuronal proliferation, migration, and axonal growth. Additionally, it regulates mitochondrial function and intracellular trafficking. Dysfunctional DISC1 has been associated with structural brain abnormalities, synaptic deficits, and altered neuronal connectivity, which are common features in neuropsychiatric disorders. The multifaceted roles of DISC1 in cellular processes and its potential as a biomarker or therapeutic target underscore its significance in neuroscience and psychiatry research.
