Pig Occludin ( OCLN ) Elisa, provides a quantitative measurement of the concentrations of PiG Occludin, in Plasma, serum and other biological fluids, by extrapolating the analytical signal obtained against a standard between 0.312 ng/ml - 20 ng/ml. Occludin (OCLN) is a transmembrane protein that plays a critical role in the formation and maintenance of tight junctions (TJs) in epithelial and endothelial cells. Tight junctions regulate paracellular permeability and maintain cellular polarity by sealing the space between adjacent cells. OCLN spans the membrane four times and contains two extracellular loops and a cytoplasmic C-terminal tail that interacts with scaffolding proteins such as ZO-1, ZO-2, and actin cytoskeleton components. OCLN is phosphorylated on serine, threonine, and tyrosine residues, which regulates its localization and stability at the tight junctions.OCLN is essential for the integrity of epithelial barriers in tissues such as the intestine, blood-brain barrier, and kidney. It participates in signaling pathways that control cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration, contributing to tissue homeostasis. Dysregulation or mutations in OCLN are linked to disrupted barrier function, leading to diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), hepatitis C virus infection (as OCLN serves as a co-receptor for viral entry), and neuroinflammation. Knockout studies in mice reveal impaired tight junction assembly, increased permeability, and defects in tissue development, underscoring its importance in maintaining cellular barriers and tissue integrity.
