Descripción
AKAP1 is a mitochondrial scaffold protein that anchors Protein Kinase A (PKA) and other signaling molecules to the outer mitochondrial membrane, regulating mitochondrial dynamics, energy production, and apoptosis. AKAP1 modulates mitochondrial membrane potential by organizing signaling complexes involving PKA, phosphatases, and other enzymes. It plays a significant role in cardiomyocyte survival, as it enhances mitochondrial respiration under stress by promoting ATP synthesis. AKAP1 is also involved in the regulation of mitochondrial fission and fusion through interactions with Drp1 and MFN2, thereby maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis. Loss of AKAP1 disrupts mitochondrial function and increases susceptibility to oxidative stress, contributing to neurodegeneration and heart failure. AKAP1 also regulates reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, influencing cellular aging and survival signaling pathways like AMPK. Recent studies have linked AKAP1 downregulation with metabolic disorders and impaired endothelial function, highlighting its role in vascular biology.
