LRRC53 is a protein associated with the regulation of motile cilia function predominantly expressed in ciliated tissues such as the respiratory tract and reproductive system it plays a critical role in axoneme assembly and the coordination of ciliary beat frequency studies suggest that LRRC53 contributes to maintaining the structural integrity of the ciliary apparatus by interacting with dynein arms and other axonemal components mutations in LRRC53 have been linked to primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) a disorder characterized by impaired mucociliary clearance and infertility its role in epithelial cells also suggests potential involvement in cellular polarity and signal transduction pathways ongoing research aims to elucidate its precise molecular mechanisms in cilia-related functions and its potential as a target for therapeutic intervention in ciliopathies
