DDB1 and CUL4 associated factor 12 like 2 (DCAF12L2) is another member of the DCAF12 family, characterized by WD40 repeats that are critical for interactions with the CUL4-DDB1 complex and substrate recognition. Although little is known about DCAF12L2, its expression pattern indicates potential involvement in reproductive biology, particularly in germ cells, as well as general protein homeostasis in various tissues. Evolutionary studies have revealed events such as intronization in the DCAF12L2 gene, suggesting that this paralog has developed distinct functions compared to DCAF12 and DCAF12L1. These changes may relate to specialized mechanisms of protein regulation that allow functional diversification in different cellular contexts. While further studies are required to identify its substrates and exact functions, DCAF12L2 is a promising target for investigating the regulation of ubiquitination and its impact on cellular homeostasis and protein function.
